St Botolphs Church, Church Close, Boston, Lincolnshire
This view shows the church before 1862 when a statue of Herbert Ingram was put up in front of the church. The West tower has the famous octagonal lantern called the 'Boston Stump'. The church began life as the church of a Benedictine monastery. Rebuilding work was carried out between 1309 and 1390. The tower was started in 1450 and finished circa 1520. The church was restored in 1845 by Gilbert Scott and again in 1851-3 by George Place, with further restoration by Sir Charles Nicholson in 1929.
