St George's Hospital, Semington, Wiltshire
St George's Hospital was originally a workhouse, then a hospital for the mentally handicapped. Built as a workhouse (1836-38) under the 1835 Poor Law Act for the Melksham Workhouse Union, it's original layout remains unaltered. The front range contained boys' and girls' schoolrooms and a board room in the centre part. The rear wings and yards were for the accommodation of men and women in separate blocks. The kitchen and dining areas were in the central wing to rear. Single-storey buildings also contained workshops, stables. A low building on the east side contained cells for vagrants.
