St Giles Hospital Chapel, Maldon, Essex
The ruinous St Giles' Hospital was built as a hospital chapel in the late 12th century. An Inquisition in 1402 stated that the Hospital of St Giles was founded by one of the Kings of England. It was for the maintenance of a chaplain to celebrate daily service daily, and for the lepers of the town. It was probably founded by Mantell, the Lord of the Manor. It was linked to Augustinian Bicknacre Priory. After the Dissolution the Chapel was used as a barn and was still roofed until 1921.
