The Crescent, King Street, City Of Leicester
The Crescent with the spire of Holy Trinity Church in the background. The column on the right is known as the High Cross. The High Cross, in fact, was a circular structure with eight pillars supporting a pointed roof. It was built in 1577 as a market shelter and stood in Highcross Street. By 1733 it had fallen into disrepair and was sold off in sections. One pillar remained on the site until 1836. It was bought by James Rawson, owner of The Crescent in King Street. After being moved to various sites it was finally located in Cheapside in 1977, where it still remains.
