The Exeter Eye Hospital, Magdalen Street, Exeter, Devon
The Eye Hospital was built in 1902-1908 to the designs of Mr (later Sir) Alfred Brumwell Thomas. The builder was Stephens and Son of Exeter. It was the first provincial eye hospital to be established following the foundation of Moorfields in 1804. The competition for the new building, designed to accommodate 85 patients and an outpatients department, was assessed by Mr Charles Barry. The estimated cost was £19,000 with an additional £6,000 for furniture and fittings. The money was raised by a public appeal.
