The Lawn, Union Road, Lincoln, Lincolnshire
This is the former Lincoln Lunatic Asylum. It was designed by Richard Ingleman and built between 1818-20. It is important in the treatment of the mentally ill because it was here that Edward Parker Charlesworth and Robert Gardner Hill pioneered the treatment of patients without physical restraint. This was between c1831 and 1838. This principle was then adopted at the influential Hanwell Asylum, in London, from 1839.
