The Old Battery, Dartmouth Castle, Dartmouth, Devon
A good example of a small Victorian artillery fort dating from 1861. It was built on the site of Lamberds Bulwark, later known as Maiden Fort. It was built partly from 17th or 18th century masonry. The battery is square in plan and held three 64-pound guns pointing south-eastwards towards the sea. There were magazines behind and some barrack accommodation. There were another 2 guns on the top. A painted brick emplacement for a 120mm gun was added in 1940 and given a castellated parapet to make it look like an antiquity to enemy planes. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
