The Old Clarendon Building, Oxford, Oxfordshire
The architect Nicholas Hawksmoor's first building in Oxford was a new University printing house (now known at the Clarendon Building). It was built in 1712-13 on a prominent site, newly cleared of houses. The builder was William Townesend. The project was funded out of the profits of one of the University Press's most successful books, Lord Clarendon's History of the Great Rebellion (1702-4). By 1830 the University Press had moved to its present quarters in Walton Street but the building is to this day the meeting place of the Delegates (the governing body) of the University Press. It is now part of the Bodleian Library.
