The Old Manor House, Stocks Road, Aldbury, Hertfordshire

This house (now two houses) was never a manor house. It dates from circa 1500 and consists of a open hall house of an unusual form. It was built for either Henry Winch or for the Russell family. In the mid 17th century a two storey extension was added to the north and several fireplaces and floors were inserted in the hall. These alterations took place before 1663 when Bennet Winch paid tax for 5 hearths: his initials are on the main chimney stack. By 1722 the building was described as a house and two cottages. The house has a timber frame which sits on a red brick sill with red brick infill.
