The Tolsey, Burford, Oxfordshire
This building dates from the 16th century. It is first documented in 1561. It has been used as a town hall, market hall, court and museum during its life. Burford's wealth was based on the wool trade and it is here that wool merchants did much of their business. It is a timber framed building, standing upon stone pillars. At one time is had a lockup (prison) on the ground floor. Also until the 20th century the towns fire engine was kept under it.
