Two Bridges, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear

A view from the south bank of the River Tyne towards the Swing Bridge and High Level Bridge. The low level swing bridge links Newcastle and Gateshead. It is on the site of previous Roman and medieval bridges. The Roman bridge was built by the order of the Emperor Hadrian in AD 122. The swing bridge was designed by Sir W G Armstrong and Company under the supervision of the Tyne Improvement Commission. Building work began in 1868 and the bridge was completed in 1876. It had to swing open to allow ships to pass into the docks. The High Level bridge is a railway and road bridge dating from 1845-9. It was designed by Robert Stephenson for the Newcastle and Berwick Railway Company.
