Two workmen on a construction site for John Laing plc in Carlisle, Cumbria

John Laing plc built a 'family' ethos among the workers in their company. Before the late 20th century, it was common for people to have a 'job for life' – lots of workers stayed at the company for many years, sometimes their entire working-lives. Often many members of a family would all work for John Laing plc, and there were apprenticeship schemes which trained young workers on the job. The man on the left was one of the newest workers on a construction site in Carlisle, whereas the man on the right had worked for John Laing plc for a much longer time.
