Watford General Hospital, Vicarage Road, Watford, Hertfordshire
This building is part of Watford General Hospital. The hospital was originally Watford Union Workhouse. It was built between 1836 and 1837 and could accommodate 281 people. The architect was T L Evans who also designed the workhouses at Bishops Stortford and Westbury. From 1904 the children born there were given 60 Vicarage Road as the address on their Birth Certificates, rather then the Watford Union Workhouse. This was to try and protect them from being disadvantaged in later life. The workhouse then became Shrodells Public Assistance Institution before being taken over by the NHS and renamed Watford General Hospital.
