Worsley Old Hall, Worsley, Greater Manchester

Worsley Old Hall is a low two storied building partly timber framed and partly of brick. It dates from the 17th century. There is a date of 1639 in one of the upstairs rooms. The hall is said to have been moated but no signs of the moat now remain. John Gilbert lived at the hall from 1759, after he came to Worsley as the agent to Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater. Gilbert, James Brindley and the Duke met here to discuss their canal strategy. The Egerton family sold their Worsley estates in 1923. It became offices for Manchester Collieries and then the National Coal Board. In 1971 it became a restaurant and in 1998 a hotel, country club and restaurant.
