York Citizens War Memorial, Leeman Road, York
The City War Memorial was put up in 1924 in the War Memorial Park. It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. It commemorates civilians who died rather than soldiers. One inscription reads 'TO THE CITIZENS OF YORK 1914 - 1918, 1939 - 1945'. The inscription on the north side reads 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE' The Leeman Road District War Memorial, nearby, is inscribed “In proud and loving memory of the men and women of Leeman Road District who gave their lives in the Great War.” It also records the names of women who were killed in an explosion at the Barnbow munitions factory near Leeds.
