School Pupils Visit Browndown First World War Practice Trenches
On Wednesday 22 January, secondary pupils from Brune Park School visited Historic England’s archaeological investigation team on site at the Browndown Practice Trenches as part of the Gosport Heritage Action Zone.
‘Practice’ trenches were dug to train troops before they were sent to the Western Front and these First World War trenches at Browndown are well-preserved.
The pupils have been looking at aerial photographs, results of a drone survey and researching the background to the First World War and trench building with a view to creating a digital interpretation of the site for educational use.
The visit enabled the pupils to find out how Historic England is surveying the site and to 'ask the archaeologist' about their role.
The project, part of the Historic England Gosport Heritage Action Zone, aims to raise awareness of these important remains, a source of information about the past, and engage the local community.
The survey being carried out by Historic England will define the extent of the surviving remains, providing a better understanding of their characteristics to inform future management and presentation.
